Salt Dough Hand Print Ornaments

In an effort to get into the holiday spirit and to preserve a small moment in time I decided to make salt dough hand print ornaments with my kiddo. I’ve found a few recipies on blogs and Pinterest and just modified it a bit to suit my needs.

Ingredients:

2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup cinnamon
aprox. 1/2 cup to 1 cup water

Mix the dry ingredients well and then start adding a small amount of water at a time. You want the dough to be wet but not too watery. If it’s too thick it will be hard to work with.

I was able to divide this mixture into 4 equal sized balls. I rolled out the dough to about the size of a salad plate on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper. My kiddo has big hands so I had to make sure I could get his whole hand. Also, don’t roll the dough out too thin.

I used a straw to make a hole at the top of the ornament and then let him smoosh his hand in there. Be careful that they don’t wiggle their fingers too much.

I then used a toothpick to write the year in the dough as well.

Bake in the oven at 150 for about an hour. I flipped over the ornaments and let them cook for another 30min.
You can also just let them air dry over night.

You could also use cookie cutters instead of doing hand prints.

Once my ornaments were out of the oven I wrote his name and age on the back with Sharpie and added a pretty ribbon.
